Apply for your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
A SIN is required to work legally in Canada. To apply, you need a work or study permit that says you may work in Canada. If your study permit does not say this, contact IRCC. Refugee claimants and protected persons may be able to get an open work permit. SINs for temporary residents start with 9. Apply online, by mail or in person at Service Canada.
